Hawk & Dove 1 (November 2011)

Are they bringing Don Hall back to life?

My brain actually hurts after looking at the Rob Liefeld art on this book. I was trying to understand his view of the human body and its proportions and I think my brain broke. His men seem to be without waists and ribcages and his women have the proportions of Barbie dolls.

And Liefeld’s Deadman is just plain goofy. He looks like a life-size balloon.

Given the incompetence of the visual storytelling, I can’t tell if Gates had a good script. I don’t think so. I think he breaks the rules of epical progression to be cute and the reader gets stuck with a couple lengthy exposition scenes.

Strangely, I’m sort of curious about the characters. They’re supposed to end up together. Will Gates address it, will he ignore it, will he give Liefeld more panels to butcher?

We shall see….

One Response to Hawk & Dove 1 (November 2011)

  1. When you’re a company within a business that you are a major player in, you’d imagine that showing off your best foot forward would be a priority. Not so here, as art hack Liefield turns in his favors again for a chance to draw comics. This comic has so little chance to succeed, as the written word here is subjugated to some of the most lazy, insipid visuals by an artist with no narrative chops whatsoever. What ever chance Gates may have had here in getting people to read his book is squashed by some of the ugliest art available. Art students may rejoice at finding the panel by panel, page by page atrocities against sequential narrative that they can avoid when creating their own comics. A primer on how NOT to publish a comic book. A real shame, and a step back in proving DC can release quality books. Or at least readable ones. Makes me wonder what was available instead to display instead of this sad excuse for stealing three dollars from the fan.
